Activity 2.2.1- My Daily Water Use

My Daily Household Water Usage (3-Month Period)

Actual monthly water usage (gallons)

May: 32,700 gallons

June: 27,300 gallons

July: 28,400 gallons

Water Calculations

1) To calculate the average amount of gallons per month, I added each month's gallon usage and divided that total by 3.  (32,700+27,300+28,400=88,400/3months=29,467 gallons/month on average)

2) Next, I divided my average household water use per month by the number of people in my home, which is 4 people. (29,467/4=7,367 gallons/person/month)

3) Lastly, I divided the per person/month total by 30 days. (7,367/30=245 gallons per day for one person)

Results

Comparing my results to the average usage per person in the United States, which is 80-100 gallons of water per day, the daily average per person in my household was 245 gallons of water daily. That is over half of the average amount of daily water usage in America. This estimate is beyond the average amount in America. The number of gallons of water my family has used monthly has become a surprise to me. Along with the amount of water used daily in my household. Now, looking over the utility bills and the calculations, I do understand why we have used so many gallons of water. The water bills in my family have been higher recently due to watering sod over the summer. While there are four members in the household, most of us also take daily showers and wash dishes regularly. This clearly increases the number of gallons daily, and we most certainly need to watch our water usage. The online calculators showed 184 gallons used per day in my household. That is still above the average amount in the United States. I am very fond of now having an estimate for my household water usage. This shows the members in my household and I that we should be cautious of our daily water usage. The decrease in gallons of water used daily would not only save my parents money on this utility bill, but it would also save water that would be useful for the environment.
