Activity 3.2.1- Natural Resources Review

Image
Here is my concept map for natural resources https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitL5zeRqcYRcCTfJ7DeFyFv_EoixTUskxUJgDZbYsn4WxOnVHFdtn10QXYmZgnCexaPNQgMYGb7CKAHlUsMR3n3IGBML7rRWnoiMtZcAgPvyvMXlDUNxX-O0webQAzcXnVjjpfH-2MimtMi63MNrfMpAkrJvaLplSUTcmNtp8gB9ymzHX_zqBRBTOy/s1319/Screenshot%20%281%29.jpg . (I posted the link so the image can be seen in better quality). Based on the concept map that I created from the video that I watched, all of these connections are about natural resources. The definition of natural resources on my concept map is "Anything that people take from the environment and use" (Jerome, Exploring Natural Resources). Once I put that definition, I displayed two separate boxes, Non-Renewable resources and Renewable Resources.  These connect to the natural resources box because non-renewable and renewable are the two types of natural resources. The examples that I used for non-renewable resources were oil and natural gas. ...

Activity 3.1- Human Population

Two Countries I Chose: Northern Africa and Northern America Country 1: Northern Africa Birth rate: 23 Death Rate: 6 Population Growth Rate: 1.7% Life Expectancy for Males and Females: 73 for males and 75 for females Fertility Rate: 2.9% Gross National Income: $9,626 Country 2: Northern America Birth rate: 11 Death Rate: 10 Population Growth Rate: .10% Life Expectancy for Males and Females: 75 for males and 81 for females Fertility Rate: 1.6% Gross National Income: $64,417 Based on the data that is shown for both countries, it is clear that Northern America is the more developed country, while Northern Africa is the least developed country. The reason why this is the case is because the birth rate for Northern America is 11, while the birth rate for Northern Africa is 23. The larger the population is in a country, the lower the birth rate is. According to our reading in Canvas, " Currently, there are two disparate demographic worlds. On one end is an old, rich, and ...

Activity 2.2.1- My Daily Water Use

My Daily Household Water Usage (3-Month Period) Actual monthly water usage (gallons) May: 32,700 gallons June: 27,300 gallons July: 28,400 gallons Water Calculations 1) To calculate the average amount of gallons per month, I added each month's gallon usage and divided that total by 3.  (32,700+27,300+28,400=88,400/3months=29,467 gallons/month on average) 2) Next, I divided my average household water use per month by the number of people in my home, which is 4 people. (29,467/4=7,367 gallons/person/month) 3) Lastly, I divided the per person/month total by 30 days. (7,367/30=245 gallons per day for one person)   Results Comparing my results to the average usage per person in the United States, which is 80-100 gallons of water per day, the daily average per person in my household was 245 gallons of water daily. That is over half of the average amount of daily water usage in America. This estimate is beyond the average amount in America. The number of gallons of water my fa...

Activity 2.2- Cryosphere

Activity 2.2- Cryosphere: Grinnell Glacier, Montana                                                                         First Photo (Stanton,1911) Second Photo (McKeon, 2008) Third Photo (Admin, 2019) Grinnell Glacier, Glacier County, Montana                                                                                              These photos of Grinnell Glacier show how it has changed over time (From 1911 to 2019). In the first photo from 1911, there is a big wall of ice. Well, looking at the second photo, in 2008, that wall of ice has diminished. Thro...

Activity 2.1- Atmosphere: Reduce Northwest Vista College's Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Problem Greenhouse gases are any gas that emits radiation. "This could be water vapor, methane, ozone, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide" (Why Are Greenhouse Gases, 2021). However, the one we hear about the most is carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a natural gas in the atmosphere, so that is one reason why it is affecting us daily. How is this a problem for Northwest Vista or any other college? Well, since there is so much human activity on college campuses, such aa transportation by bike, car or bus, there is a big amount of carbon dioxide around the college environment. "Humans today have so much impact on a global scale that most geologists, ecologists, and natural historians maintain that we have entered an entirely new geological epoch, known as the Anthropocene" (Why Are Greenhouse Gases, 2021). Investigation Most people want to reduce climate change and greenhouse gases. However, in present time, we are still witnessing..." rising temperatures, extended...

Module 1.2- A Turning Point Event for Environmental Science, Rachel Carson: Silent Spring

Image
1. Point of View The video explains Rachel Carson's beliefs in her book, Silent Spring. While watching this video, the majority of it discussed how her book gained attention from the population and became the most controversial book during her time. Quite a few people started to believe that human indecency rose over nature. However, the video showed the other side of this topic. Chemists and biologists spoke out and claimed that humans are progressively controlling nature. These were the two sides of this controversy, that is mainly why her book was deemed controversial.  2. Purpose The purpose of the video was to show how Rachel Carson's book affected the majority of the population. How people viewed her once she released the book, and all the opinions surrounding the book. She was either viewed as a heroic woman, trying to save the environment, or a communist. The video showed why people had those opinions on her. She wanted to gain attention from the population in order to ...
